AB  - The  pituitary  gland  is  often  termed  the  “master  gland.”  Under  the  direct  control  of  the  hypothalamus,  which  in  turn  receives  input  from  various  brain  centers  via  neurotransmitters,  the  pituitary  gland  modulates  the  function  of  most  endocrine  glands  in  the  body.  The  pituitary  gland  is  in  fact  2  separate  glands  juxtaposed  against  each  other:  the  anterior  pituitary  or  adenohypophysis  and  the  posterior  pituitary  or  neurohypophysis.  As  the  names  suggest,  both  originate  from  different  sources  during  development.  The  following  discussion  will  focus  on  the  anterior  pituitary  gland  and  its  regulation  by  the  brain  as  well  as  its  impact  on  the  function  of  peripheral  endocrine  glands.
