AB Plague  exists  worldwide  as  continuing  enzootic  sylvatic  disease  in  rodent-flea  cycles  that  occasionally  spreads  into  the  human  population.  Yersinia  pestis,  the  causative  organism,  is  a  nonmotile,  gram-negative,  non–spore-forming,  coccobacillus.
