More than 70% of children in foster care have been exposed to which of the following?

A. Tuberculosis

B. Venereal disease

C. Child abuse or neglect

D. Drug use

E. Alcohol abuse

Answer: C

The majority of children entering foster care have lived in deprived and chaotic environments for a significant period of time until removal for imminent safety concerns secondary to maltreatment. More than 70% of children in foster care have a documented history of child abuse or neglect, and > 80% have been exposed to significant levels of violence, including domestic violence.

These factors should be kept in mind to deliver the most effective and trauma-informed care to patients in foster care.

While foster children may have been exposed to the other answer choices mentioned, the rates of exposure are not known at this time, and child abuse and neglect remains a significant factor and has a major psychological and health impact in the lives of foster children.

Foster children often have experienced significant psychological trauma, which may manifest as a variety of physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms. Which of the following is an evidence-based trauma therapy that is recommended to treat these symptoms?

A. Trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy

B. Participation in afterschool programs

C. Inclusion in appropriate and varied peer groups

D. Play therapy

E. Frequent exposure to biological family

Answer: A

Parent-child interaction therapy, child-parent psychotherapy, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, and the attachment, self-regulation, and competency model are some recommended evidence-based trauma therapies for children in foster care.
