PY - 2018 T2 - Rudolph's Pediatrics, 23e AB - Trauma is the number 1 cause of mortality and morbidity for children even in the developed world, and major resources are still needed to prevent and treat traumatic injuries. Between 1 month and 18 years of age, one-half of all deaths in children are the result of a traumatic injury. Trauma accounts for more deaths in children in this age range than all forms of cancer, heart disease, and infections combined. The objectives of this chapter will be to review the differences between adults and children in regard to mechanism of injury and physiologic response; discuss pathophysiology and the initial management of the trauma victim; and outline common injuries involving various organ systems.
