PY - 2018 T2 - Rudolph's Pediatrics, 23e AB - Rickettsial infections are caused by pleomorphic gram-negative organisms that contain both DNA and RNA. They are obligate intracellular parasites, have typical bacterial cell walls and cytoplasmic membranes, and divide by binary fission. The order Rickettsiales includes only 2 families, the Anaplasmataceae and the Rickettsiaceae. Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species are from the family Anaplasmataceae, whereas spotted fever and the typhus group, as well as the causative agent of scrub typhus (Orientia tsutsugamushi), are from the family Rickettsiaceae. All of these diseases are commonly referred to as rickettsial diseases.
