In the United States, it affects between 10,000 and 15,000 infants annually, including as many as 50% of extremely low–birth-weight (ELBW; birth weight < 1000 g) infants. BPD is a leading cause of mortality after the first month of life in extremely preterm infants and is a strong predictor of chronic respiratory and cardiovascular impairments, growth failure, and neurodevelopmental delay.
