DENV is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti (and less commonly Aedes albopictus or Aedes polynesiensis) mosquitoes. DENV causes asymptomatic infection, DF, or a severe syndrome (dengue hemorrhagic fever [DHF]/dengue shock syndrome [DSS]). The latter is characterized by systemic capillary leakage, thrombocytopenia, and hypovolemic shock.
